Game Developer Magazine Cover
Wow, I’ve updated my blog like 3 times in the past two days… I’m on a roll!
Anyway, about a month ago I got a chance to design the cover for the latest issue of Game Developer magazine, furthering my cred as a geek artist. The issue is finally hitting print in the next week or so, yay! It’s also being displayed proudly on the Game Developer website.
It’s a very simple design, but then again, Pac-Man was always a simple game. There’s some wonkiness to the image, but I was under a really tight deadline, so I hope I’m forgiven. Namco Japan approved the image (isn’t that awesome?), so it can’t be TOO bad, heh heh.
The magazine’s primarily for folks in the game industry, so you can’t really run down to Border’s to pick it up. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen it in any real bookstores. I think I’m getting a few copies mailed to me - maybe I’ll take some pictures with them and post ‘em up. HEY, it’s like my first published work, alright!
I’m working on getting some other stuff published, too! Eventually, my hope is that you won’t be able to turn your head without seeing one of my little doodles staring at you. In fact, after my clone children take over, it’s going to be a requirement of every citizen of Yutopia (lolz) to get a tattoo from me. And I’m probably going to put it on your face.
ALSO: Johnny Ryan, the creator of the incredibly perverse and funny Angry Youth Comics and also the Comics Holocaust ‘zines, has actually put up a shitty piece of fanart that I did for him at San Diego Comicon this year on his website. I really wasn’t sure he was going to. When I tore the drawing from my sketchbook and handed it to him he looked at it like it was an anthrax bomb or a dead fetus.
I think it’s funny that he credited me as “Yu.”

I dig it… it’s very… “magazine-y” but at the same time it’s distinctively Yu. Especially the ghosts. I really like the concept.
this is another one that would make a good wallpaper, if you just expanded it left and right. That’s probably a violation of something, though, isn’t it?

nice woooork! the colors are really perfect. man, pretty nice hedge maze too. the last hedge maze i saw ended up with a dead diggory and voldemort at the end.

Hey, guys-
Sorry for not responding sooner! Thanks for all the props. Warms the cockles of me heart. It’s not really a big deal, but I appreciate the enthusiasm.
There’s also a spread on the inside (for the actual article) that uses another variant of the pic that has some of the Pac characters in it.
It’s not really my “style” per se, but I think it’s got some of my flavor. Namely some perspective problems. Plus the ghosts all have little ding-dongs hanging there… they’re just hidden by the walls.

I actually have to say that it is by far the most appealing cover I’ve seen yet, I like the colors. Very nice on the magazine feely cover. (: YUm.

Hey! Sorry about that. I’m the one who actually posted that “fan art” on Johnny’s site (I’m his wife) and I was just going by the signature. I had no idea what your full name was, but now that I do, it’s been fixed.
