Doomed

In high school once one of my buddies led me into the bathroom and showed me this absolutely massive shit someone took in one of the stalls. It had the girth of a tall can of Arizona Iced Tea and there was a piece of notebook paper pasted to the toilet that read “Don’t flush - tell your friends”. It just occurred to me that I’m still really curious about who was responsible. We got some good chuckles out of it over the years, thanks.

Anyway, I made some time to do some more Doom fanart. I always liked the creature designs in the original games and I thought they were very interesting. The pinky demon in particular - its broad, oversized head, delicate-looking human arms (by comparison), and vaguely bird-like legs struck me as being a pretty unique and memorable design (and very hellish).

    It was me, dude.

    It was me.

I’m definitely a fan of the one on the bottom. Although, with how red he is, it reminds me of Lord Kimbo from X-Files.

Badass, man. Really nice work. i’ve been enjoying Doom Legacy on my mac. It’s weird playing in 1680×1050 though!

That’s fantastic. I always imagined the pinky demon as having a more monstrous face, but the way yours looks vaguely human makes it so much more creepy. :)

(Also, seeing you post this only makes it harder to wait for the future version of DoomRL that will finally include your pixel art.)

Awesome. You really captured the feeling of deformed monster flesh Doom had.

I always thought Doom sprite, specially the pinky demon, had a kind of Ray Harryhausen feel. That kind of organic but deformed look and the limited animation…

Is there ever going to be a DoomRL with your tile set?

  6. Derek Says:

    Thanks, guys!

Re: DoomRL - Yes, there will be. Version 1.0 of DoomRL will be graphical (as an option).

I used those toilets exactly three times, so I’m fairly confident it wasn’t me.

If Doom had featured Yu demons, I would probably be in an asylum right now, whispering pleas for help.

I am REALLY digging your tumblr blog, seriously amazing artwork!

It completely captures that magical car ride home from the mall where I would just stare at the boxart of whatever game I had just bought and imagine the amazing world that someone had dreamed up.

Since the HD explotion, they should make like, Doom HD using these, they are fantastic, and yes, the original doom enemies rule.

Hi Derek! I just wanted to say that your upcoming tileset for DoomRL looks *AMAZING*, and I’m really looking forward to it being released. It will take DoomRL to a whole new level. You are the best! Best regards from Kada in #tigirc :)

  13. Derek Says:

Cool, thanks! And those tiles are many years old, too. :)

Kornel is working hard on the graphical version now, so hopefully it won’t be too long before I can start jamming on it again.

DAMN! That’s great artwork! Specially on the pinky. The imp should have been brown, not red, but this is incredible work! You that made these should help be part of the DOOM high res sprite project, to place these incredible graphics into the game!

  15. Brendan Says:

+1 to Mtzfire - I was just about to say the same thing! You have a better conception of the Doom monsters than most people, and I’d love to see you do the 3D models or sprites for the Doom hi-res projects.
